This is a piece created to accompany “Abject Of The Night” – which extends on the idea of bats as a Taiwanese symbol for “joy and peace.” This piece plays on ornamental designs – in many Baroque/Rococo
filigree ornaments – there are usually animals or monsters perched proudly on the filigrees. While in this piece, the bats are tangled and frustrated within the filigrees. This is an extension of the idea from “Abject of The Night”, which Taiwanese people praise everything from the west, thus diminishes their own cultural identity and cultural worth. Thus – the bats, a symbol of joy and peace within the country, is frustrated about the over-appraisal of Western influences.
